Construction Has Begun for a Stormwater Conveyance Improvement Project Near Tomball
August 26, 2009
The Harris County Flood Control District has begun a project to improve conveyance of a main drainage channel in the Tomball area. The $4 million project will increase the capacity of a Willow Creek tributary that begins just south of West Main Street at Barbara Street and extends downstream, flowing under U.S. 249 to Willow Creek. The tributary is approximately 2 miles long.

Work will consist of limited widening of the channel upstream of U.S. 249 and construction of a larger channel downstream of the highway to improve the conveyance of stormwater to Willow Creek. The District also will further excavate a stormwater detention basin near the Willow Creek and U.S. 249 to offset the additional flow of stormwater during times of heavy rain. When complete, the basin will have the capacity to store approximately 90 million gallons of stormwater.
Approximately 383,000 cubic yards of soil will be excavated for the project. Construction is expected to be complete near the end of 2010.
