Our Mission

The District's Mission
Since its creation, the Harris County Flood Control District's role has become increasingly complex. Whereas, its original role was to serve as the local partner for major projects with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, many other facets of reducing flood risks in Harris County have come into play.
Accordingly, the mission of the Harris County Flood Control District is to: Provide flood damage reduction projects that work, with appropriate regard for community and natural values.
The District accomplishes its mission by:
- Devising the flood damage reduction plans;
- Implementing the plans; and
- Maintaining the infrastructure.

What We Do
We accomplish our mission at the District by:
| 1. |
Devising the flood damage reduction plans that can be adjusted accordingly. Most recently, the District has initiated comprehensive Watershed Master plans for each of the major watersheds in the county.

The Watershed Master planss will address the current and anticipated needs for new or improved stormwater and flood damage reduction infrastructure for each watershed. |
| 2. |
Implementing the flood damage reduction plans, by taking elements of the plans and defining projects from those elements, programming each project in an annual Active Projects (CIP), and executing each project. |
| 3. |
Maintaining and managing the extensive network of District facilities, through a variety of means, including regular mowing cycles, vegetation management, de-snag operations and rehabilitation of the channels and stormwater detention basins. |
